A good garden looks pretty. A great garden gives people somewhere to breathe, unwind and potter. Somewhere for children to learn and play, older people to stay connected to the seasons, families to spend time together, and food to grow.
That is what Notes from the Potting Shed explores.
This is the shared journal of The Year Round Gardener and Properly Grown: two sister businesses with one big belief:
Outdoor spaces should be used, understood, properly cared for and enjoyed. And, they should be shaped around the people who live with them.
Natural England’s People and Nature Survey found that 91% of adults agree spending time in nature is good for their physical health, and 90% agree it supports their mental wellbeing. A large study of nearly 20,000 people also found that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature was associated with higher levels of self-reported health and wellbeing.
The RHS State of Gardening Report 2025 found that 77% of gardeners said gardening benefited their mental health, 76% said it supported their physical health, and 44% said it improved their social wellbeing.
So when we talk about gardens, it's not "nice-to-have" territory. We are talking about spaces that support and enrich everyday life.
For families, that might mean a garden for entertaining, and where children can play, pick strawberries, pull carrots from the soil and learn that food does not begin in plastic packaging.
For older people, it might mean being able to keep enjoying a much-loved garden without the worry of heavy jobs, awkward pruning, unsafe paths or borders becoming too much to manage.
For busy households, it might mean stepping outside at the end of the day and feeling relief, not another list of things that need doing.
For schools and community projects, it might mean creating growing spaces where children can learn through their hands, not just through a worksheet.
The benefits of outdoor space are much easier to feel when the space itself feels welcoming, safe and manageable.
A neglected garden can become a pressure. A shrub-swallowed path. The lawn that is too wet, too long or too uneven to use. A border that needs sorting but somehow gets worse every time you look at it. The veg patch that started with good intentions and gradually became a nettle nursery.
A well-cared-for garden takes the pressure away, invites people outside, and it gives the space back to the people it belongs to.
That is the work of The Year Round Gardener.
The Year Round Gardener brings horticultural knowledge to everyday garden care. Plant health, soil awareness, pruning judgement, seasonal timing, border management, shrub care, lawn understanding, wildlife consideration. Knowing what to cut, what to leave, what to feed, what to move, what to divide, and what simply needs time.
A good gardener tidies a space, yes. A great gardener reads it. It becomes less about just "keeping on top of things" and more about noticing where the light falls, where the soil stays wet, which plants are thriving, struggling or taking over, and which jobs are urgent and which can wait.
For older clients especially, that kind of care can make a huge difference. A garden may hold years of memory, pride and routine. It may be the place someone has planted, pruned, weeded, watched birds, grown roses, picked herbs or marked the seasons for decades. When the heavier work becomes harder, the answer should not have to be giving the garden up.
The right support helps people keep enjoying the space they love.
Properly Grown is the sister business with a more specific focus: creating incredible food-growing spaces for families.
This is where the garden becomes productive. We help people create edible gardens that are practical, beautiful, child-friendly and built to be used.
Think raised beds, vegetable patches, container growing, compost, mulch, irrigation, planting plans, crop supports, seasonal planting, soil improvement and ongoing growing support and consultation.
For some families, that might mean starting with a small raised bed and a simple first-season plan.
For others, it might mean turning a larger area of the garden into a proper kitchen garden, with multiple raised beds, crop supports, frames, composting areas, a greenhouse, children’s growing beds, or space for future expansion.
Properly Grown is for people who want to grow food at home but do not want to spend the next three years working it all out through trial, error and several abandoned seed trays.
It is for busy families who care about what they eat.
Families who are fed up with supermarket dependency, rising food costs, questionable sprays, bland produce and the general feeling that we have become disconnected from where our food comes from.
Families who like the idea of growing food, but need someone to design it, source it, build it, plant it and show them how to keep it going.
In other words, this is not a bag of compost and a hopeful thumbs up.
It is a proper food-growing system, designed around your garden, your family and the way you actually live.
Through Notes from the Potting Shed, we will be sharing practical guidance from both sides.
Seasonal garden jobs. Plant care advice. Food-growing tips. Ideas for gardening with children. Support for schools and community spaces. Thoughts on keeping gardens manageable as life changes. Honest advice on what is worth doing, what can wait, and what makes the biggest difference to how a garden feels.
Because gardens that are cared for properly give so much...
They give children a place to learn, older people a place to keep enjoying the seasons, families a reason to step outside, wildlife somewhere to land, and they give food a story.
And sometimes, it gives you five quiet minutes by the back door, watching something grow, remembering that good things still take time.
